Hi, I am Karen Peak. I have been married since 1993 and have two children, a son who was born in '98 and a daughter born in '04. I primarily am an at-home parent and am able to adapt my schedule around being home with my kids and critters. I began working formally with my first dogs in 1982. Though I have titled dogs in Conformation, Obedience and Agility, my main goal is teaching the average dog owner how to create a well-mannered companion (much different from my days of learning competition work). When my son was a toddler, I opened West Wind Dog Training in Northern, VA. In 2001 my husband and I developed The Safe Kids/Safe Dogs Project to address the issue of dog-related injuries. By the time the project was not even two years old, it received a small grant from the Virginia Department of Health Center for Injury and Violence Prevention. The Safe Kids/Safe Dogs Project has evolved to cover all ages, expectant families, dog owners and those who may encounter dogs while working in the field. I have had various articles published both in print and on line including: The Sheltie Pacesetter, Sheltie International, The United Kennel Club's Bloodlines, Pet People's Place (online), Pet Prospects (on line), etc. Future projects include a book for expectant families and their dogs. Along with my background in dogs, I have worked with cats, bred Angora rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, and other small animals. I also volunteer with a local Shetland Sheepdog rescue organization.

She is also on the Board of Directors of the Jacob Perlow Hospice, where in addition to serving in a supervisory capacity she is in charge of a newsletter regarding the doings of the Hospice. She and her husband have given money for many divisions in the hospital, which carry their name, and which spend their energies on helping people with neurological ailments.

Her interests are varied, she spends time at her favorite museum, The Metropolitan, also The Museum of Modern Art, and tries in her free time to see the latest offerings on Broadway. She is a typical New Yorker, preferring to wear black as her favorite color, touched with bright touches, such as a scarf or jewelry.

If you ask her what her favorite city is, she does not hesitate to answer loud and clear.....New York, NY.
