Dear Lady Barber:
My guy has a full head of very curly hair. I just adore running my hands through it. He, on the other hand, hates his hair. He complains he looks like a clown and wishes he had straight hair. Can you help us out before he cuts his hair really short, or heaven forbid shaves his head completely!
Laura D.

Dear Laura:
Personally I think some men look extremely hot and sexy with a shaved head. Hey, at least your guy still has a full head of hair. I have a few clients with extremely curly hair who complain about looking like a "puff ball."

There are a couple of options that will make the two of you very happy.

If your guy is the type of man who doesn't want to fuss or fight with his hair, a shorter cut or a buzz cut will give your guy more control over his unruly locks. All he has to do is towel dry, add gel and he is good to go for the entire day. This is the perfect cut if your guy is a jock. If your boyfriend wants to keep his hair longer, Lady Barber recommends the following:

Do not blow dry hair on a high setting This will increase volume. Use low setting and continually brush hair at the same time for a straighter look.

Do not shampoo every day. Two to three day old hair styles better. This is a rule for both men and women to follow. On the days where one doesn't shampoo, wet your hair and massage your scalp. Another way to absorb excess oil is to add baby powder and brush it through dry hair.

The use of gels, pomades, conditioning creams and molding wax products will offer extra control on curly and frizzy hair and provide shine at the same time. He will have no trouble finding products that will work for him.

He needs to have his hair trimmed every 5 - 6 weeks. Also, have your guy talk to his barber and/or stylist about "thinning" his trouble spots. If all else fails, I recommend your boyfriend asking his cutter about relaxing his hair. It's a chemical straightening method and it will last for a few months.
