CAREER TIP OF THE MONTH
INTERESTED IN SWITCHING CAREERS?
There are four tried and true ways to get experience - three of which you can do without quitting your job:
1) Take Classes: The simplest step is to attend continuing education classes at your local community college or high school. This is an inexpensive, low-risk alternative for testing out your interest and skill level. While taking the class, talk with the teacher and other students to find out their recommendations for employment options, degree programs and growth opportunities within the world of finance. If you really enjoy the classes and decide you're ready to get the needed credentials for success, then investigate the possibility of enrolling in a degree or certificate program at an accredited college. Most programs offer weekend or evening classes to accommodate older students.
2) Volunteering: it's a great way to perfect your skills in a new line of work. Let's say you want to learn more about finance. You could volunteer as the treasurer for a fund raising event at your church or synagogue or prepare some budgets for your favorite local non-profit agency. A good volunteer job can be time consuming, but you should be able to work your hours around your paid work commitments.
3) Internships: Working as an intern on a part-time basis is another wonderful way to get those needed skills. Try to find degree programs that offer internship opportunities. If that can't be arranged through the school, you might be able to arrange an internship with a local employer. Many interns are ultimately offered permanent employment by their internship supervisors.
Ultimately, it may behoove you to work on a temporary basis to further enhance your portfolio of skills and "real-world job experience. Of course, working as a temp will mean that you'll have to abandon your day job, but the experience and networking contacts you'll gain should help pave the way to a successful job search. Making the transition into a new career takes time, so be patient but persistent. Develop a plan, stay focused on learning new skills, earn the necessary credentials and before you know it, you'll be well on your way to a more satisfying career.
