Here it is, the month of July and our country's biggest celebration of freedom, independence, and all things great in America. Which leads me to introduce you to a wine that is made of a grape indigenous to America. The Zinfandel. Hey, you thought all our grapes came from Europe? Well, there are the rumors and speculations that this grape came over from Italy or even Croatia. But for the past 150 years or so, it has become known as the American grape. And I love it! This big, bold, wonderful, fruity, sexy, all American wine is so rich and flavorful, it is the perfect match for all of your traditional American BBQ and grilling.

Zinfandel wines have long been a favorite of all our in-the-know wine friends in California. However, it has taken quite some time for this information to spread across the country. People still think that Zinfandel is the "pink stuff"! Well, it's not. This deep, red, fruity, bold wine is the best bottle to bring to a Fourth of July celebration cookout.

I'd like to share a few of my favorites, in a variety of price ranges, for you to go to your local wine merchant and look for. I do hope you all enjoy your great American wine on our great American holiday.

Great American Wines

It's nice to use left over wine for marinades for you BBQ's. But remember the rule "Only cook with wine that you would drink". If it is a very old open bottle lying in your fridge or on your countertop, it will add an unappealing flavor to your marinade. So pour yourself a nice glass from a newly opened bottle and then add a splash to your "special sauce".
Sound familiar?  Of course it does!  Stop all the arguing and give your guests something they can clearly mark as their own. Pick up a pack of Etch It Cups and be done with it, for Pete's sake!
